Tupac Amaru II was an indigenous cacique who led the largest Andean rebellion against the Spanish in Peru in the 18th century. As the self-proclaimed Sapa Inca, or divine monarch, of the new Inca Empire, on November 16, 1780, he decreed the abolition of slavery for Black people for the first time in Spanish America. He also sought to eliminate the obrajes (textile workshops) and the reparto (forced distribution of goods) that burdened indigenous communities.

Tupac Shakur, or 2Pac, was a prolific Black American rapper, actor, activist, and revolutionary who left a lasting impact on American culture and hip-hop. He used his platform to promote Black Power and critique the systemic and interpersonal injustice towards Black people and other minority groups in the United States. Shakur's double-length posthumous album Greatest Hits (1998) is one of his two releases—and one of only nine hip-hop albums—to have been certified Diamond in the United States.

We honor them both.
